Fiction Submission
Broken Pencil is looking for works of fiction from diverse writers (broadly defined) that conform to no principles, no guidelines, and no preconceptions. We want work that is quirky, surprising, moving, and raw. Take us on a walk off the beaten path. Show us some strange and wonderful things. Make us see the world differently. Solid, well-written, carefully considered prose showing a strong grasp of the mechanics of grammar and syntax is always a pleasure to read. To get a sense of the work we publish, take a moment to read a few issues of the magazine to see if yours would be a good fit. It is always helpful to know the name of the magazine and the fiction editor and to spell them correctly. Please, no COVID-19 pandemic stories, right-wing conspiracy theories, or gratuitous accounts of threesomes.
Stories should be no longer than 3,000 words. Payment varies, depending on the status of our finances. Right now, we pay between $60 and $120 per piece.
Be patient. We read fiction submissions year round, but due to the volume of submissions, it might take us a while to get back to you. We want to assure you that every story you send to us is read with consideration and care. Please do not submit more than one story at a time and do not submit more than once every six months--we want to read only your very best work.
Please note: by submitting your story to Broken Pencil you are also agreeing to becoming a recipient of our monthly e-newsletter. You can unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time.
Optional Submission Fee:
We ask for an optional submission fee to offset the cost of keeping an open submission policy. All submissions will be treated the same regardless of whether or not you opt-in to the submission fee. Friends, Broken Pencil is a not-for-profit magazine devoted to zines, independent print culture, and fiction on the edge. Please consider supporting us!
